Let me out!!

I’m sure many dog owners have dogs that do something similar - but it always brings a smile to my face when herbie wants out. He’s usually a little more subdued, but I had ignored him the first time he rang the bell and he had paced and stared at me, and in general tried to get my attention, while I ignored him so he would ring the bell again. He gave it a heck of a bang!

Herbie and the kitten

We have wild cats - about 9 of them and 1 semi tame cat Doodle. Doodle and Herbie get along pretty good. If they’re together, Doodle lays down and lets Herbie maul him. He makes short slow moves and there are usually no problems.
Well, this morning one of the kittens came back inside the fence after Herbie was let out for his morning wee. I was fixing breakfast but heard herbie barking - i thought it was his ‘barking at a frog’ bark and didn’t even look out right away. When I did i saw he had one of the kittens down with his paw. The kitten was snarling and swinging on him - at this point Herbie was not biting or trying to kill the little thing. (probably 3 months old). When I went outside - saying NO NO NO herbie…. he put his nose down closer to the kitten. The cat tried to escape again and herbie caught him again. I grabbed herbie’s collar and pulled him back and made him drop it. The poor little thing ran into the fence a few times and I guess found his way out. I dragged herbie in the house and made him go in his ‘box’ for a little while. Kitten didn’t show up for breakfast - haven’t seen him since. I don’t think Herbie ever bit down hard or wanted to kill it. think being the operative word. If I see killer kitten later - I’ll try to take a pic if I can get close enough.

Neutering your dog

Herbie said goodbye to two things that were very close to him last week.

Yup - we had him neutered on Thursday morning. It wasn’t an easy decision either.

He seems to be doing fairly well. Sleeping a lot still. The incision looks good and there is only a small amount of bruising. He is sticking really close to me. He’ll run real fast from point A to point B and then just plunk down in a sit like he has a weight on his butt. He seems to have his appetite back.
I think he’ll be ok.
We go to the cabin next weekend - hope he’s pretty well healed up and back to normal by then!

Not much excitement going on

Spent the weekend at the cabin with Chief and Quanto - played a LOT with Chief. Jim played Frisbee with Herbie too- he actually caught it twice..(Herbie - not Jim) we’re going to be working on that one. It’s hot work!

Went down to the cabin last week - we’re on the lake - you’d think it was cool - even with the A.C. running full blast - we’re at “GLISTEN” !

Herbie catches an Opossum

Herbie was not quite a year old when he caught his first critter. It freaked me out more than a little! The possum did a very good job of playing dead. Herbie would NOT let go of it though. I finally poked them both with a stick (I will never learn) - and he dropped it. The possum skittered underneath a boat we have by the pond and then jumped in the pond. He was fine. I got Herbie the Hunter back on his leash.
It wasn’t two weeks later we were in the woods and Herbie took off. I could hear him barking but he would not come to me. I followed the sound of his voice and found him up in the middle of a big pile of trees and limbs.   He had *something* cornered and was not going to leave. I had to shimmy my way into the pile and drag him by the collar. It stunk SO bad in there - I had to keep qtipping my nostrils to get the smell out.
I don’t get to let him loose much anymore.    He did kill that muskrat that attacked me though!

Herbie on Tv?

I sent in herbie’s pitching video to KPLR Tv Channel 11 - a St. Louis station that we watch here at home. They have a cool show and feature called MiSpin that features videos that folks send in. I got a letter today telling me to watch on June 23rd at 6:30 - and I may see Herbie’s pitching video on the show!! No pawtagraphs please!

Herbie has always been one to want to sleep either in his box - or right next to someone - I think Jim started it! He would nap with the grandkids just like this!
